Things to do in Downtown Juneau

With extraordinary views and interesting things to do, downtown Juneau is a great place to spend part of your Alaska vacation. You’ll learn more about Alaskan history and eat some of the best fresh caught seafood in America. Exploring this amazing city isn’t complete without a stay at downtown Juneau’s luxury boutique hotel, Silverbow Inn. Here are some things to do if you’re taking a trip to downtown Juneau.

Alaska Brewing Company

The famous Alaskan Brewing Amber Ale is part of a historical recipe that dates back to Gold Rush times. This brewery uses local flavors like glacial water, spruce tips and alder smoke. Alaskan is all about embracing the local Alaskan culture and preserving its beauty. You can find their beers in most of the Northwest, but visiting the brewery itself is a whole different experience. If you visit the brewery, you can take a guided tasting tour for $5 which includes samples and a souvenir. Stay awhile and try the beers on their rotating tap list.

Perseverance Theatre

This nationally recognized arts institution holds performances all across Alaska. For their current season, they’re showing To Kill a Mockingbird until mid-April. Next season, the theatre is featuring shows such as Steel Magnolias and A Christmas Carol. If you love the arts, Perseverance is a one-of-a-kind place to catch a show in Juneau.

Whale Watching

In April-November, you’re sure to see humpback, killer and orca whales throughout the waters that surround Juneau. On an official whale watching tour, you’ll take a chartered boat out on Alaska’s Inside Passage. Along the way, you’ll more than likely see bears roaming the wilderness or bald eagles soaring above you.

Fresh Seafood

You won’t find better seafood anywhere else than Alaska. Juneau has several restaurants that serve locally caught salmon, crab, halibut and prawns. Check out Tracy’s King Crab Shack for the best crab legs and crab rolls in Juneau. If you’re in the mood for halibut, try Papa Rod’s Halibut & Chips for amazing fish and chips dinners. Alaska Fish & Chips Company at the Flight Deck is one of the best indoor/outdoor seafood bars, if you’re also in the mood for reindeer sausage.

Ziplining

Fly high through Juneau’s lush forests and see some wildlife from an amazing view. Guided zipline tours offer an incredible way to experience Juneau’s beautiful views. It’s very safe and something the whole family will enjoy. You’ll glide from enclosed treehouses where you can stop along the way to take in the panoramic views. You can zipline through Alaska Zipline Adventures at Eaglecrest Ski Area or Alaska Canopy Adventures on Douglas Island.
