Salt water pool systems provide an alternative to maintaining your pool with chlorine, but many pool owners fear they are too expensive. The reality, however, is that a salt water pools can save you money in the long run.

Below ground, outdoor, irregularly shaped salt water pool.
Salt water pool systems work by filtering non-iodized salt into a natural form of chlorine. Just like a traditional chlorine system, salt water systems eliminate algae and bacteria, yet they offer plenty more advantages. These systems are less irritating to sensitive swimmers, offer better sanitation and can eliminate long-range costs.

Initial costs of a salt water system range from $2,000 to $5,000, depending on whether or not your existing pool has compatible equipment. Check with your pool manufacturer to determine whether or not your pumps and pipes can operate with this type of system. Once you have the system installed, it will pay for itself in approximately two years. This is because there is no more need to buy chlorine. The only costs associated with the salt water pool are any standard testing kits, other pool chemicals and salt. It’s estimated that the average salt water pool uses less than $20 worth of salt every summer. Now that’s a bargain!

Train travel is a great way to reach a destination. There are great places to travel by train if you are a senior citizen. Train travel allows a person to seeing the scenery as they travel. Often there are package deals, discounts, and special rates for senior citizens. There is no bag checking on trains. If it is a longer excursion, then there are sleeping rooms for the night. Different train cars have restaurants or game rooms to relax in.

Old train at Old Jaffa Train Station, Tel-Aviv-Yaffo, Israel. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A popular train excursion for senior citizens is package tours of National Parks. A traveler can visit a combination of Glacier National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. They will not have to deal with driving themselves through the mountains of these areas. Riding a train means being able to see everything with no distractions.

Seniors who live in the south where there is no winter will enjoy train vacations traveling north to Vermont and New Hampshire in the autumn to see those areas beautiful fall foliage. Great places to visit for those who enjoy music and entertainment are Branson, Mo. and Nashville, Tenn. Seniors can arrive safely at their destination without having to fly.

Travel toward the west on train trips that transport seniors to the Colorado Rockies, Bryce Canyon, or Zion National Park. Travel further to reach the Pacific Ocean and see the sites in Oregon or California. See sea lions and dolphins while visiting the beaches on the west coast.

A senior can also travel outside of the United States on a train. Make sure to have a valid passport for these excursions. You can go south of the border to Mexico to see Copper Canyon. Trips are also popular north of the border. See the Canadian Rockies, Niagara Falls, or Dinosaur Provincial Park in Canada.

It is very important to know the difference in pool liners and choose the one that is right for you. You need to know that when you are not using the pool it can be a danger. If you are looking for a heavy gauge liner Unibead liners is one example. They are very easy to install, it slips over the top of your pool wall and hangs into your pool. The really unique thing about these liners is they come with patterns around the edge. It is made of 20 gauge vinyl and has uv and algae inhibitors that allows you to get many years out of your Unibead cover.

Image via Wikipedia

Another type of pool cover is expandable liners. This is a durable cover that is meant to last through some very bad winters. These quality liners will fit an above ground pool that is up to 72″ deep. Make sure you get the proper size to avoid wrinkling although some is to be expected. The expandable liner has uv inhibitors and resists chemicals, algae, and bacteria. The overlap liners are another type of liner that is very easy to install. Overlap liners are designed so that the excess materials extends over the pool and is held down with coping strips. This type of liner provides extra material for the deep end. They are also protected by uv discoloration and chemical deterioration. The vinyl is 20 gauge that comes in many colorful prints. It is very important when picking out a cover that it’s one that should be atleast 20-25 gauge vinyl, it will hold up best with strong weather change. These liners are all meant for above ground pools.

Do you know someone with a disability? Chances are you can think of a few individuals. Disabled people actually make up one of the biggest minority groups in the United States. Disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional, sensory or cognitive. All together, 20% of Americans have been determined to have some type of disability, both mental as well as physical. That’s one in every five people you know. One in ten has a severe disability. These results are based on The Disability Census 2000. It is important to consider those who are disabled. Pool lifts are available for disabled Americans and can be found at Swimtown’s online pool store. As Americans, despite the fact that we don’t have universal health care, assistance is available for disabled persons in most urban areas. Areas such as the Great Plains, however, are less likely to have such facilities and services. Physical disabilities refer to any impairment that hinders a person either in movement or motor ability. There are two possible causes of physical disability. One is prenatal causes, or disabilities present prior to birth. These are often caused by any illness the mother has suffered during her pregnancy or incompatible genetics between parents. There are also perinatal causes, which occur during birth. An example of this would be any brain damage due to the improper use of forceps or blocked airways. This term also applies to babies who are born prematurely. The third possible cause for physical disability involves postnatal causes, in which a person could develop disabilities due to accidents or sickness. There are three types of physical disabilities. These include visual impairment, hearing impairment and mobility impairment. Mobility impairment involves conditions where one does not have the ability to skillfully use one’s limbs, as movement is impaired. This condition can either be congenial or brought about by old age. Congenital disability defines a disability that was caused within the uterine environment. Certain diseases can also be associated with physical disabilities. Those who have suffered dramatic bone fractures can also be considered disabled. If you know someone who suffers from a disability, then you may know that often times, special equipment is needed to help disabled people experience the same quality of life that able-bodied people experience. One such device is a pool lift. Check out pool lifts available at Swimtown Pools by browsing their products online. Also check out all the products that the pool store has to offer.

Traveling is never as easy as it should be. First you have the tough decision of where to go and how long to stay. Next you have to decide how to get to your travel destination and where to stay. For some travelers, the planning process doesn’t end there. Travelers with disabilities also have to consider accessibility. The hospitality industry provides many resources to travelers to accommodate the needs of everyone.

For any traveler, preparation is the key to a successful trip. Be sure to research your travel destination and hotel. Explore the transportation available to get to your destination as well as at your destination. Taxis are obtainable in most cities, but can be very pricey. Look into the accessibility of other forms of transportation such as trains and subways to make traveling easier. Know the layout of your travel destination before you go. Cities with cobble stone streets or hilly towns can be difficult for wheel-chaired travelers. Look into elevator access at popular tourist destinations and your hotel. Make inquires to your hotel about the available facilities and services for disable travelers. It is better to ask questions in advance than to arrive and not have the accommodations you need. Many disabled travelers don’t know that it is now a law that hotels and public pools in the United States now have to offer pool lifts for their disabled guests. Don’t be bashful when asking about this amenity.

After determining a destination and hotel that best suit your needs, deciding how to get there is next. If traveling by plane, be sure to make any special requests in advance. It is common for airlines to only allow one wheelchair on board, so early arrival can help that be yours. To ensure your wheel chair isn’t mistaken for the airlines or doesn’t get lost if checked, be sure to label it with your name and address. When checking in, don’t hesitate to ask for a seat that allows you to be most comfortable or provide you with easy access to the restroom. If necessary, take extra prescriptions in a carry on in case checked luggage is lost. Another option for travel is accessible van rentals. They allow for easy access in and out of the vehicle and there is no hassle when it comes to checking luggage and wheelchairs. Rentals are available worldwide and some locations have access to mobility products if needed.

Reaching out to other travelers can also help your planning process. They may be able to provide you with information potential hotels, airlines or rental companies cannot. No matter where you destination is or how you decide to get there, be sure to plan in advance. Early planning will help your trip go smoothly and allow you to enjoy your vacation!
