Small-Town Attractions in the Outer Banks

The barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina are known as the Outer Banks. They are dominated by small towns and enormous sand dunes clothed in shaggy grasses. You can hear magic in the names of the towns that have thrived in this place of sea and sky and sandy soil. Nags Head, Duck, Southern Shore, or Kill Devil Hills, are just a few of the beguiling spots that any visitor must see when they come to the Outer Banks. Shoreline OBX Vacation Rentals offers their tips on awesome things to do when you’re in the Outer Banks. So put on your comfortable shoes or sandals and let the fun begin!

Crafts, Artifacts, and Works of Art

This small town is home to a number of antique shops, novelty stores—that specialize in books, décor, or niche interests—art galleries and artist cooperatives. For the relaxed type of getaway most come to the Outer Banks in search of, any of these venues would make an ideal spot to spend a lazy afternoon. Bring back a souvenir of your time on the islands that is unlike any other in the world. But art galleries, antiques, and crafting workshops are only the beginning of the amazing things to see in Kill Devil Hills.

History’s Place

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located on the historical dune, and commemorates the 1903 flight that changed the world. They house a full-sized reproduction of the brothers’ airplane and stage reproductions of the momentous event. The towering dune was planted with protective grasses in the 1920s and a State Park situated on the site. However, since dunes are naturally mobile—moving with the unceasing sea winds, this historic site is actually several hundred yards to the south of the place from which the brothers took wing.

Wine and Dine

Kill Devil Hills also boasts the OBX Winery—the only establishment of the kind on the Outer Banks—which grows, blends, and bottles the distinctive regional wines that are a star on any dinner table. After a refreshing afternoon exploring the shops and galleries, tasting wines or walking along the many beautiful beaches, have dinner at the OBX Mystery Dinner club. This venue provides performance art as an accompaniment to your meal. The servers and staff are each playing a role and provide guests with clues throughout the evening. It’s up to you to guess whodunit!

There are a thousand other wondrous and wonderful things to do here—from kayaking to a walk in the sprawling nature preserve. In the Outer Banks, there’s magic for everyone, no matter what you like best.
